How Ready Are Students For Live Learning Online?

The educational field has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Online learning methods have replaced traditional classes that are held in a classroom. They blend the flexibility of prerecorded classes and class meetings held via real-time software. However, these online methods aren't enough for students who prefer the live interaction of a face-to-face classroom.

Live online learning is an alternative option to other online learning strategies. It allows instructors and students to communicate in real-time using videoconferencing programs such as Zoom. Students can ask questions, clarify confusion and help them gain a better understanding of the content.

Although there are many advantages to using live learning however, it can be difficult for some students to adjust to this type of online learning. This study focuses on student readiness for live learning and identifies the primary elements that impact it. The results reveal that most important factors that influence students' readiness are motivation for learning online, self-directed learning ability. Researchers also conducted a post-hoc test and multi-group analysis to analyze gender differences, undergraduate, graduate, and sub-degree students. The study revealed that postgraduates are better prepared for live learning than undergraduates and students with sub-degrees.

It is recommended that instructors set clear expectations of what students have to know and do prior to, during and after a Live Session. It is crucial to provide additional materials, such as summaries or gist quizzes. Also, outline, concept maps, and study guides are helpful. Instructors should also design exercises to reinforce what students have learned - such as reviewing, practicing debating, discussing, and analyzing.
